Transmission Cables

Optical fibers are used in fiber optic communications which helps in the transmission over a longer distance and at a higher data rates than the other forms of wire and wireless communications. Signal is better through fiber wires so fibers are used instead of metal wires. Optic fibers are used to form sensors and also in other applications. Fiber optic net work operates at a high speed. Their bandwidth has large carrying capacity. Signals can be transmitted to a longer distance. It has greater resistance to electro magnetic noise like radios, motors or other needy cables. The maintenance cost of these transmission cables are less when compared to other cables. The optic fiber is immune to all kind of interference like thunder; lightning and electricity will not be conducted. As glass is the material used in making the basic fiber, it avoids corrosion. The fiber optic cable can be easily buried in any soil and can be exposed to any adverse condition of chemical plants. There is no concern of shock or fire to the personnel who repair the broken fibers.
The basic transmission cable system is made of three elements. They are the, the fiber optic receiver, optical transmitter and the fiber optic cable. The optic cable is made of glass fibers which plays the role of waveguides for the optical signal. It protects the optical fiber from within. An optical splice is used in case the systems require transmission for long distances and when two or more cables are joined together.

There are two basic cable designs; they are the Loose-tube cable and the tight buffered cable.

Single mode cable is one of the modes of transmission cables. Single modes have a narrow diameter and it propagate with one mode only. The single mode carries a higher bandwidth when compared with the multi mode fiber. Single modem fiber is used in many applications where data is sent at multi-frequency, so only one cable is needed. Multi mode cable has a little big diameter with a common diameter of 50 to 100 micron range for the light carry component.

The latest optic fiber cable reduces the cross-talks between the fibers, or reduces the flare in the fiber bundle imaging applications. The cables should be protected from environmental hazards, such as gnawing of animals and construction works. The cables under the sea should be heavily protected from the sharks, fishing gears and boat anchors which tend to get attracted to these power signals. Cables from the modern technology come with a variety of armor and sheathings and so it can be directly buried in trenches. It can be latched to submarine installations.

Fiber optic transmission cable is the best one for secure communication systems because it makes tapping of communication very difficult and monitoring them easily.
